South Shields Interchange

In 2019 we were commissioned by Bowmer & Kirkland to produce the external and internal brand signage solutions at the newly constructed South Shields transport hub to welcome visitors.

One of the key objectives was to effectively design and plan the wayfinding from all accessible routes which included multiple wayfinding signage solutions for effective communication. There was also multiple advertising points for use by client to communicate to visitors including large digital interactive screens. The bus terminal bay signs and several decorative features were also required to create a brand experience.

The use of both traditional production methods but also the latest innovations in digital signage solutions (eg LED advertising totems) at the site meant that the user experience was not compromised but instead enhanced. Both approaches compliment each other and create a superb brand experience.

There was a multitude of varying requirements at the site that necessitated the use of both traditional production techniques but also the latest industry processes, substrates and digital solutions. Our consultancy on selecting the most suitable methods of production throughout the site was integral to its success.

Vitreous panels made up most of the internal fascias in both the bus concourse (600mm high – two different fascias) and the Metro concourse (300mm high). These fascias also incorporated certain signage that was screen printed then enamelled along with the blank panels so that the finish was consistent.
