astley was honoured to support the Foundation of Light with signage for the Beacon of Light – Sunderland’s most innovative education and sports facility, located beside the Stadium of Light and Sunderland Aquatic Centre. This unique venue serves as a hub for learning, fitness, and community engagement.

As the first facility of its kind in the UK, the Beacon of Light required a signage solution that was both functional and design-driven. We delivered a complete signage package that included external wayfinding to drive visitors into the location effectively, vibrant brand icons for ambient graphics and engraved sponsorship plaques.

The requirement

The challenge was to create signage that could support a multi-use space – combining sports halls, education suites, football pitches, and informal learning zones – while reinforcing the building’s inspirational and community-focused identity.

The solution

astley helped develop and deliver a signage scheme that matched the building’s bold architectural vision and supported its diverse functionality. The use of high-impact materials and vibrant branding ensured that signage played a key role in shaping the environment and guiding users throughout the space.

By working closely with the Foundation of Light stakeholders and phasing the install process with consistency and care, we helped ensure this iconic project made a lasting impression – both visually and practically.
