Totems command attention

By displaying dynamic, moving content, digital totems allow users to experience your brand and absorb key messages quickly and efficiently, even from far away.

If you need to create maximum impact and have complete flexibility with your communications, a digital totem could be the ideal solution for your brand. Through integrating digital hardware into totem fabrication, we can offer highly customised assets that provide the perfect messaging opportunity whilst re-enforcing the brand within the environment.

For us it’s not just about building a sign — it’s about providing an ongoing digital service that enhances a client’s brand experience while being practical and robust in the real world.

Digital totems we've designed and installed include:

The cost of compliance

Astley invests in keeping as many services as we can in-house, to ensure we maintain oversight of quality at all stages but also to try and keep costs down which we pass on to our clients.

Astley was one of the first UK signmakers to invest in achieving BS EN 1090 for structural fabrication, and we remain one of only a handful of UK signage partners that offers this service in-house. This means that brands can rest assured that our design, manufacturing and installation processes answer health and safety legislation.

We also invest in the training of employees to be train to be an ‘Appointed Person’ so they can create lift plans. In the UK, anyone acting as the appointed person for a lift has to make sure the job is planned and carried out safely, as required by LOLER 1998. For putting up a totem, this means creating a lift plan that covers the weight and size of the sign, the right crane and lifting gear, ground conditions, the order of the lift, and how to control risks like swinging loads or working near the public. Having a proper plan also shows you’ve done your due diligence and helps protect against fines, legal action, or insurance issues if something goes wrong.

Our Process

Survey

Surveys are essential at the outset of any project, but particularly vital when considering a digital totem. This stage allows our teams to capture key information to prepare for power supply and cabling as well as advise the projects team on accessibility for installation purposes. Surveys also help ensure the RAMS respond effectively to the environment.

Discussion

Our project team will work closely with the client to establish what type of screens are best for the location (eg. durability, brightness) and discuss key characteristics such as the look of the totem and how it will be installed. It’s also important to consider how the content will be updated and how secure the network needs to be.

Working together

Our technical teams work closely with engineers to ensure that structural requirements are answered and that fabrication is compliant and fit for purpose.

Manufacture and branding

The manufacture and branding of totem will be carried out in accordance with BS EN 1090 standards, ensuring all processes meet the relevant legislative requirements.

Installation

Installation of digital totems may require planning permission which our projects team are happy to support clients with.

FAQs

Can you use my current totem and just add a screen to it?

While we always aim to work sustainably, reusing an existing structure is rarely feasible for digital totems. Integration of a power supply and cabling is essential to run the screens, and the totem must be fabricated to protect components from weather damage and vandalism. Additionally, the extra weight of digital screens increases the need for detailed structural calculations to ensure a safe and compliant installation.

We do always ensure to remove redundant signage and dispose of it in line with our zero-waste-to-landfill promise.

I’m not sure what type of screen I need for my totem.

Our team can advise on this and will take into account the location eg. inside or outside, durability, brightness and need for interactivity. They’ll also discuss how you want to update your screens and if you need them to be networked. Whatever your requirement, there will be a solution to suit.
