Supporting landmark design with local expertise

astley was proud to support Faulkner Browns Architects and Bowmer & Kirkland with the stunning new £42m City Hall development in Sunderland—providing full-service signage collaboration for this major public sector development.

A striking and now RIBA award-winning complex, which houses office, leisure, and residential spaces, was brought to life with internal and external signage manufactured at our local Gateshead facility. Our close proximity to the site assisted a streamlined delivery process and showcased the value of local production for regional development projects.

astley’s in-house design studio worked closely with Faulkner Browns to translate their architectural concepts into physical assets. From ambient graphics to wayfinding, we provided visuals and detailed, manufacture-ready technical drawings that guided production and installation.

The requirement

With a project of this scale and prestige, the signage and branded elements had to reflect the architectural vision while remaining functional, compliant, and cohesive across varied building uses. A collaborative, design-led approach was essential.

astley’s creative and technical teams partnered with the architects to ensure that every visual concept was refined into approved specifications ready for final manufacture. This collaborative workflow demonstrated our ability to bridge the gap between design intent and physical realisation – supporting both in-house and third-party creative teams with precision, flexibility, and technical expertise.

The result is a unified signage scheme that complements the modern architecture and supports the flow and functionality of this impressive development.
