Celebrating the art in nature

Helping to create an immersive and engaging rural space to celebrate nature

Balancing the art of signage with the art of nature

Located on the open tranquil countryside of Hexham in Northumberland’s National Park, The Sill is a £14.8 million pound tourist attraction funded from the Heritage Lottery Fund that provides information to the public on the local area and its history.

We were commissioned by creative agency Bright to translate their concepts for the visitor centre into physical signage and wayfinding graphics through the grounds of the venue.

The requirement

The venue was to become a leading tourist attraction that would invite thousands of visitors each year and host multiple events. Creating an effective wayfinding scheme was essential to the success of the site and the experience of visitors.

Striking the right aesthetic balance was also essential to ensure the branding complemented the surrounding natural beauty.

Our solution

We worked closely with the agency and the venue stakeholders to help develop the concepts into physical products that could answer both the wayfinding functionality but also offer a bold and unique design that enhanced the environment.

Signage and branded elements included car park directional signs, welcome and entrance totems, bike store branding and bespoke ground-level information blocks.
