Integrating traditional and digital signage for seamless navigation

astley was commissioned by Bowmer & Kirkland to deliver a full signage and wayfinding system for the newly constructed South Shields Transport Hub, a key project in the transport sector designed to welcome and guide visitors arriving by bus or Metro.

We worked closely with the client to design, manufacture, and install a range of signage solutions tailored to the site’s multi-modal nature. From clear, intuitive wayfinding to interactive digital screens and large advertising totems, our goal was to enhance the user journey and provide a memorable branded environment.

Key features included bus terminal bay signs, decorative installations, and advertising points throughout the site. Internally, the use of vitreous enamel fascia panels ensured durability and aesthetic quality, with screen-printed elements seamlessly integrated for consistency.

The requirement

The hub required a signage and wayfinding solution that catered to a variety of functions and environments, from high-traffic transit concourses to branded spaces for visitor engagement. Each element had to be clear, durable, and fully accessible while complementing the architectural design.

Working alongside other contractors on-site and collaborating carefully during the development phase was an integral part of the brief.

Our solution

astley brought together traditional craftsmanship and innovation to deliver a signage suite that met Bowmer & Kirklands aesthetic brief as well as answering the functional demands of the site. Our consultancy on material selection, including the use of enamelled fascias and integration of digital displays, ensured every component was both practical and visually aligned.

The end result is a transport hub that delivers clear communication and a cohesive user experience – supporting both daily commuters and new visitors through well-considered, expertly delivered signage.
